Photographers create valuable property when they invest their time,
equipment, raw materials, creativity, support service fees, travel and
other required goods and services in the course of making pictures.
According to the United States copyright laws, the person owns a
photograph if they have created it. These same U.S. copyright laws and
associated international treaties protect the creative property for the
photographer's life plus 50 years.
Copyright laws prohibit copies of an image from being made for public or
private use or display without permission. The law also requires that any
person making copies of an image must determine who owns the copyrighted
work and obtain permission before making any copies.
Stock and fine print photography can not continue to survive unless the
photographers, who spend a great deal of time and money creating the
images, know that they will be fairly compensated for their work. With
countless designers and agencies depending on stock photography, and with
the growing interest by the public in fine print photography, keeping the
business honest and complying with the established copyright laws creates
a winning situation for everyone.
